Make Your Business More Profitable

Posted by:

I’m always a bit skeptical when I hear that someone has built a $20 million dollar services business in less than 24 months (or some unusually short period of time).

First, I know how hard it is to build a $1 million dollar business, and with services, scaling it to the $20 million dollar level requires a level of growth that’s almost incomprehensible.

But, these claims, raise a far more compelling question.

Just how much money do they make? Is it really profitable?

While ...

Is Blogging a Viable Business Growth Strategy? What we can learn from Seth Godin

Posted by:

Let’s talk for a moment about blogging and the role that it plays in attracting more new clients. The larger question becomes, should it really be a part of your client attraction or business growth strategy?

What got me thinking about this was Seth Godin’s 500th Blog post. It’s worth reading (as is virtually all of Seth’s writing) but what caught my eye, was a comment he makes late in the blog.

Why aren’t more people doing this? (Blogging)

I know ...

Pricing Your Services

Posted by:

According to one McKinsey study, changing your pricing structure has the greatest impact on your overall profitability. However, pricing is a complicated topic and comes with an assortment of competitive and psychological baggage.

A lot of the issues around pricing reflect our internal beliefs. We may justify a lower price for any of a number of reasons, but the reality is that we’re usually just simply uncomfortable charging what we’re worth.

I went through a version of this about 6 months ...

Building Trust & Credibility

Posted by:

In an ideal world, clients would come to our website and simply hire us. However, the reality is that we need to build trust and credibility before someone is going to invest in us. So the question becomes, “How do we do that?”

This is a particular challenge for those of us (and I would put myself in that camp) who don’t like to beat our chest and shout how great we are.

The answer is that there are a number ...

An Interesting Marketing Website To Model

Posted by:

I saw a mention of a website for the firm Capitalist Pig in a recent article in the Wall Street Journal and decide to pay a visit. I’m glad I did since it’s a very well designed website with a lot of marketing lessons everyone should be considering (regardless of what type of services you provide.) If you’re focusing on business growth, it’s worth checking out.

Visually the site does a very effective job of creating a great ...

Selling the Problem Not The Solution

Posted by:

OK-I know I’ve gone on about this before, but it bears mentioning again.

Lots of us (myself included) have a tendency to start talking about our solution w-a-y too early in the process. It’s enormously tempting, once we hear about a problem that we can solve, to bring out our “solution bat” and start wacking away at the poor person we’re talking to.

And this isn’t just a problem in face-to-face selling. We see the same thing happening with websites, sales letters, ...

If My Service Is So Great, How Come I Can’t Sell It?

Posted by:

One of the biggest questions in this business is, “How do I get more customers? Where do I find people who want to buy my product?”

  • How to find prospects in your warm and cold markets.
  • How to overcome the “no time” problem so many of us face.
  •
How to handle the “too expensive objection”
  • How to use direct response, social media and inexpensive paid advertising to get more new clients.

Does this really work to drive traffic to a website?

Posted by:

I was reading an interesting article on the five best ways to use social media to drive website traffic to a new site which reminded me that I’d prepared a short video on the topic not too long ago.

I’ll be the first to admit, there’s no shortage of thoughts around this topic, but call me old fashioned…I still believe that you’re not going to achieve a lot of success unless you take a building block approach to marketing.

What ...
